Asset Classification and Provisioning
RBI classifies assets as Standard, Sub-standard, Doubtful, and Loss assets. Loans overdue by 90 to 180 days require a 50% provision, while loans overdue by more than 180 days require a 100% provision. MFIs must provide at least 1% of their loan book as provisions.
Income Recognition:
MFIs are required to follow the RBI’s guidelines for income recognition. Income should only be recognized when it is actually received.
Restrictions on Lending:
RBI imposes limits on the maximum amount that can be lent to a single borrower and a group to mitigate concentration risk.
Audit and Disclosure:
MFIs must undergo regular audits and maintain transparency in financial reporting.
