Introduction
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has set forth the minimum capital requirements for different categories of Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs) to commence or continue operations as non-banking financial institutions. This notification, issued on March 17, 2022, is in accordance with the powers conferred by relevant sections of the RBI Act and the Factoring Regulation Act. As of October 1, 2022, the minimum Net Owned Fund (NOF) required is ten crore rupees for the following categories:
Non-banking financial company – Investment and Credit Company (NBFC-ICC)
Non-banking financial company – Micro Finance Institution (NBFC-MFI)
Non-banking financial company – Factor (NBFC-Factor)
For existing NBFCs holding a certificate of registration as of October 22, 2021, and having a net owned fund of less than ten crore rupees, they are required to achieve the NOF of ₹10 crore according to the following glide path:
